Go anywhere in the world, and you will find superb places to have afternoon tea.
An international pastime is fast on its way here in North America to becoming a new way of life, and in contrast to the fast pace of modern life, it is a welcome new tradition to add for a moment’s repose and refreshment.
Centuries Old Tradition
For centuries, the custom of taking afternoon tea is a mainstay and part of daily life, that is connected to Queen Victoria. For farmers, having afternoon tea is essential not only to feeding themselves and taking a long deserved break, it was also a way to reconnect with the family, work crew and to socialize. It was named ‘Afternoon tea’ because of the time of day this meal was usually taken. It was also called ‘low tea’ because of where the meal was served, typically in a sitting room where low tables like a coffee table surrounded by sofas and chairs.
More Than Just Afternoon Tea
There are three basic types of Afternoon, or Low Tea: Cream Tea (tea, scones, jam and cream) Light Tea (tea, scones and sweets) Full Tea (tea, savories, scones, sweets and dessert). Even before the mainstream focus on this meal, luxury hotels have served them for years. The atmosphere is lush, opulent, and feels decadent and the service in these hotels is typically exceptional. They really take good care of you and this is part of what makes the experience so memorable.
Treat Yourself to a Posh Tea
A posh Afternoon Tea or High Tea is absolutely grand! It is a meal that will make you feel so indulged. The table arrangement and the presentation of these posh teas are laid out in elaborate spreads served in silver tea pots, best china and all the finery the experience can muster. Many of the luxury hotels serve an afternoon tea, or a High Tea. If you have never experienced a posh tea, it is an experience not to be missed. These meals are very civilized and are enhanced with a glass of champagne (or two!) if you so choose. The entire experience is sumptuous and a total olfactory experience. Whether it is for a special occasion or just because, this is an experience not to be missed!
