History and Origin of The Trench Coat
The Trench Coat was designed during World War I as a raincoat, a waterproof, and knee length coat with a removable lining for use by the French and British army for officers meant to protect them from the rain and wind. This now famous coat’s design was modified during World War I to include shoulder straps and D-rings. There was a myth about the D-ring that it was used to hang your grenade, but in fact was meant for maps and other equipment. During WWII the coat was used on the front lines during battle and was dubbed as ‘the trench coat’ by the soldiers. After the wars, the coat carried a businesslike stature because of its military history ands was made famous in movies like Casablanca and was typically worn with a fedora. There are two companies that claim to have invented this coat Thomas Burberry and Aquascutum.
